Physical Domain – High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)

Our school recognises that physical potential is an important part of high potential and gifted education. Students with strengths in the physical domain may show advanced motor skills, coordination, stamina, agility or tactical awareness. We offer a variety of programs that build skill, confidence and sportsmanship while providing opportunities for students to develop their physical talents.

HPS Physical Development
We support physical development across the whole curriculum – including PDHPE, sports programs, school carnivals and representative pathways. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves, develop strong movement skills and participate in activities that build resilience and teamwork.

How we support the physical domain

We provide both classroom-based and extracurricular opportunities for students who demonstrate high physical potential. Our programs focus on technique, movement quality, athletic development, teamwork and safe participation in physical activity.

What is physical potential?

Physical potential can be seen when a student:

  • shows strong coordination, balance or agility
  • learns physical skills quickly
  • demonstrates exceptional endurance or strength
  • excels in movement-based activities
  • displays tactical understanding in games or sport
  • performs confidently in dance, gymnastics or athletics

Physical potential may appear in structured sport, creative movement, dance or general fitness activities.

How do we identify physical potential?
Teachers observe students during PE lessons, sport rotations, fitness activities and school carnivals. Students who show advanced coordination, pace, technique or tactical awareness may be offered additional challenge or opportunities.
How can families support physical development at home?

Families can support physical growth by:

  • encouraging regular active play
  • participating in local sports or movement programs
  • reinforcing persistence, resilience and sportsmanship
  • attending school carnivals and sporting events
  • ensuring children have time for outdoor activity

Our physical enrichment programs

PSSA State Knockout Competitions

Students take part in PSSA State Knockout sports such as cricket, soccer, rugby league, rugby union, AFL, touch football, netball, basketball, softball and hockey, competing at a high level against schools across NSW.

Representive Sporting Pathways

Students with high physical potential are encouraged to trial for school teams and progress to zone, regional and state representative opportunities through NSWPSSA pathways.

External Sporting Opportunities

Students have the chance to take part in NNSW Futsal tournaments and high-performance development camps hosted by the Newcastle Knights and Sydney Swans, giving them opportunities to refine their physical skills and learn from professional-level coaches.

Mountain Biking Group

Students develop balance, coordination and endurance as they ride on local trails and designated school tracks. They also learn fundamental bike maintenance skills, helping them understand safe equipment care and responsible riding.

Sports in Schools

A lunchtime program focusing on fitness, coordination, agility and fundamental movement skills. Activities include circuits, ball skills, relays and team challenges.

Swim School (Year 2)

Our Year 2 students participate in the NSW Department of Education Swim School Program, developing essential water safety, confidence and early swimming skills through structured lessons delivered by qualified instructors.

Physical learning in everyday classrooms

In the classroom

Teachers provide differentiated activities during PE lessons, allowing students to practise advanced skills, refine technique and participate in leadership roles such as coaching or modelling skills to peers.

Beyond the classroom

Students extend their physical abilities through school sport, gala days, PSSA competitions, creative movement performances, dance programs, gymnastics workshops and whole-school fitness initiatives.

Celebrating physical achievement

We celebrate students’ achievements at carnivals, assemblies, gala days, sporting presentations and community events. These celebrations recognise personal improvement, teamwork, leadership and outstanding physical performance.
